New Bird Aware rangers - October 2019

Being mid-October, we have already seen countless numbers of winter birds returning to our shores. It is also the time of year where we welcome three new Seasonal Rangers to the coast and into the Bird Aware flock.

All our new team members join us with a wealth of knowledge and a big slice of enthusiasm! Both of which they can’t wait to share with everyone out and about along the Solent coast.

David, Emily and Mark have joined the team from September up until March 2020.

Introducing… David.

I’ve recently moved East from Cornwall where I worked with the RSPB, giving talks onboard ferries to the Isles of Scilly. I’m originally from Cork in Ireland, and it was here I studied marine biology and completed a thesis on Manx shearwaters. I have a huge passion for birds and I’m really looking forward to being out helping the overwintering birds.

Meet Emily, second right in the picture.

I have just moved back to Hampshire following the completion of an RSPB practical conservation internship in North Kent. I’m very excited to be joining the Ranger team for the season and I’m looking forward to getting people just as enthused as I am about the amazing waders and wildfowl that we share our coastline with.

Last, but by no means least, meet Mark, far left in the picture above.

I grew up near the Solent and recently returned to Hampshire, the pull was too strong to stay away! I’m a passionate bird watcher and bird photographer and I also enjoy visiting nature reserves as they offer a wealth of wildlife surprises.

I’m looking forward to working with the brilliant Bird Aware Solent team in helping our overwintering birds so they can be enjoyed for many generations to come.

We are extremely lucky to be able to add such a range of experience to the team and are really looking forward to working with David, Emily and Mark throughout the winter months.

Keep an eye out for these friendly faces when you visit our coastline, and if you see them, be sure to go and say hi. They will do their upmost to answer your queries and may even have a goody or two for you to take away!
