River Itchen Southern Route
A paddle on a chalk stream with unique views of Southampton
The navigation history of the River Itchen stretches back to Norman times, therefore you might feel like you are stepping back in time as you paddle this 4.5 mile route.
A paddle along this beautiful chalk stream provides unique views of Southampton and other urban areas contrasted by a greener and wilder feel north of Cobden Bridge.
This section of the river is tidal and trips should be planned on a rising tide. At low tide, the River Itchen Northern Route remains accessible.

Conditions: A rising tide is the best option for this route as falling tides may drop very quickly causing submerged objects to become obstacles or pulling you downriver faster than you wish to go. Be vigilant of other craft especially fast-moving boats and avoid the lines of fishermen.
Time: A longer route. It will take at least 2 hours to travel entire route in one direction.
