We are expanding what we do and have successfully completed our first few events. Find out more about how we got on…
Since the Bird Aware Solent launch in January our rangers have been eagerly planning and preparing to attend a number of events. We have since attended three local events including Chichester Harbour’s Brent Goose Day, the Hampshire Ornithology Society’s Open Day and Sandown’s Hullabaloo. We have met lots of lovely people and enjoyed testing out our activities and freebies on you! Our Feeding Frenzy game in particular has gone down a storm. It involves inviting you to battle against your friend, partner, children or just the clock to see how many wiggly worms you can catch in half a minute. Why not have a go yourself at our next event and see if you are a winner? All our upcoming events are listed on our events page with more to be added soon.
The icing on the cake for our new ventures was visiting the Year One students at St Jude’s Church of England Primary School in Old Portsmouth. We took Isobel our brent goose (don’t worry she’s just a model!) along with us and spoke to around 60 students who are studying animals this term. We talked about the wintering birds on the Solent and why they need our help. The children then took part in two activities to learn about the names, shapes and colours of the birds, and also to get a good close up look at what the birds are eating when they are on our coast. All of this was wrapped up with a few rounds of our mini Feeding Frenzy game! The children really engaged with the activities and thoroughly impressed us with their answers to our questions.
Thank you to everyone who has visited our stall at an event and of course to the lovely children at St Jude’s. We hope to attend many more events in the future and hope to see you there! If you have an event or school group that you would like us to visit then please contact us.
