The Great Coastal Birdwatch

Saturday 14 October to Sunday 29 October 2023

Thanks for getting involved – and for finding out more about the wealth of wildlife on our coastline.

Did you know, the Solent coastline is a really special place throughout the world because of its unique habitats for sea birds?

By taking part in this year’s bird count this October, you’ll be making a difference to our knowledge of the amazing birds which travel here every autumn.

Make sure you download your bird ID guide and counting sheets.

How to take part:

  • With your parents or carers, choose a spot around the Solent coast to do your watch.
  • Spend up to one hour seeing how many different species of birds you can spot. Check out our Meet the birds pages for extra bird identification help.
  • Let us know what birds you spotted by using the Great Coastal Birdwatch online form. If you want, you can add to our data by letting us know how many of each species you’ve seen.

You’ll find even more tips and information on our main Great Coastal Birdwatch webpage.

The Bird Aware Coastal Code

You can also make a difference by becoming ‘bird aware’. That means you’ve learned about the birds that spend time on our coastline.

It also means you look out for their best interests when you’re visiting the coast.

You can do this by following the Bird Aware Coastal Code:

Coastal Code: Look out for birds
Coastal Code: Move further way if birds become alert
Coastal Code: follow requests on signs
Coastal Code: Keep dogs alongside
Kids Zone mudflats and saltmarshes

Solent’s unique habitats

More than 125,000 coastal birds travel here for the winter every year, from as far away as Russia and Canada. So what makes the Solent coast so special?
