Yarmouth Winter Wildlife Walk

Join our friendly rangers to see what wildlife we can spot along the Western Yar estuary on the Isle of Wight.

This is a short and gentle walk with plenty of time to stop and enjoy the wonderful wildlife that can be seen around our coast over the winter time. Our rangers will be on hand to guide and show you the birds spotted along the way.

Guided walk in Yarmouth

The walk is aimed at those who are new to, or less-experienced at bird watching. Families and children are welcome but under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. Bring binoculars if you have them but don’t worry if you don’t, you can enjoy views of the birds through the ranger’s telescopes.

The Western Yar is made up of important habitats such as saltmarsh and mudflats which attracts many different species of overwintering birds. Some of the species we hope to see include dark-bellied brent geese, wigeon, curlew, oystercatcher, black-tailed godwit, lapwing and golden plover.

All of our walks are free, but booking is required so please register to reserve your place on our Eventbrite page

Meeting place: At the southern end of the River Road Car Park in Yarmouth (across from the Wightlink ferry terminal). Look out for our rangers in their blue uniform.

Duration: The walk is around a mile long in total and will last up to 2 hours at a leisurely pace with regular watching stops.

Accessibility: This is an outdoor event in a public space. Whilst we will be following the footpath, some of it is uneven in places. Winter weather can also mean damp or muddy conditions so sensible footwear is advised.

Dogs: We welcome well behaved dogs on our walks but they must be kept on a short lead at all times.

Clothing: Please wear sturdy/sensible shoes and dress appropriately for the weather (we advise warm layers and a waterproof coat!).

Our outdoor walks and activities are weather dependant. We aim to let you know by email in good time if a walk is cancelled due to bad weather. Please check your emails before leaving home.
