Sanderling

Conservation Status: 🟠 Amber

What am I?

This small wader is a visitor to our shores during the colder months. You’ll often see them chasing the tide back and forth as they forage for food.

How to Identify Me

Often seen in their monochrome winter plumage, sanderlings are very similar in appearance to the dunlins in winter. A key way to tell the two apart is by their beaks. Sanderlings having a shorter beak with no noticeable curve.

How Can You Help Me?

Make sure you give them lots of space when you see these birds on the shore.

Sanderlings tend to follow the tide line as they feed so where possible, try to avoid walking directly along the tide line and instead stick to footpaths or the seawall where possible.

Also ensure to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
