Ruff

Conservation Status: 🔴Red

What am I?

A rare sight on our shores, the ruff is a large sandpiper. The males have a ruff of feathers around their necks which makes them look like they’re late for a fancy dinner in Elizabethan times.

How to Identify Me

A ruff is easiest to identify during the breeding season as the males’ show off a fancy ruff of feathers around their necks which they use in elegant displays to attract a mate. If it’s not a breeding season, try to look out for their slightly droopy beak which can help distinguish them from other waders.

How Can You Help Me?

Ruffs are a Schedule 1 species. Meaning that they have full protection from disturbances so make sure you give them lots of space when you see these birds on the shore.

Ruffs tend to follow the tide line as they feed so where possible, try to avoid walking directly along the tide line and instead stay closer to the sea wall.

Also ensure to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
