Redshank

Conservation Status: 🟠Amber

What am I?

With a call almost as loud as their bright beak and legs, if you’ve heard birds chirping away on the Essex coast chances are you’ve heard a redshank.

How to Identify Me

As you can guess from the name, the redshank is most easily identifiable thanks to it’s vibrant carrot coloured legs and beak. If their legs and beaks are too muddy to identify from wading for food, listen out for their loud and iconic call.

How Can You Help Me?

Make sure you give them lots of space when you see these birds on the shore.

Redshanks tend to follow the tide line as they feed so where possible, try to avoid walking directly along the tide line and instead stay to footpaths or the seawall where possible.

Also ensure to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
