Oystercatcher

Conservation Status: 🟠 Amber

What am I?

A very noisy and dapper coastal bird, you’re likely to hear them before you see them! Despite their name, they seldom eat oysters in the UK, opting instead for cockles and mussels.

How to Identify Me

A noisy resident on our shores, you can easily spot an Oystercatcher by their striking black and white plumage and vibrant carrot colour beak.

How Can You Help Me?

Make sure to give them lots of space if you spot them nesting on sandy and shingle beaches or patrolling the shore hunting for bivalves and crustaceans.

Ensure to respect signage regarding beach nesting birds as oystercatchers lay their eggs in little scrapes on open beaches. It also helps to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
