Lapwing

Conservation Status: 🔴 Red

What am I?

A medium sided wader that loves to feed on mudflats at low tide around the Essex Coast. You might also know me as a peewit after the noise I make.

How to Identify Me

Lapwing’s impressive crests and gorgeous dark green plumage make them quite easy to identify. They also have a black breast with a white belly. Listen out for their ‘peewit’ sound – where their common name comes from.

How Can You Help Me?

It’s best to avoid walking on mudflats as it helps lapwings as well as many birds to feed – not to mention they can be dangerous for us and our dogs! Make sure to give them lots of space. Why not enjoy their beautiful display through binoculars from a sea wall.

Also ensure to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
