Dunlin

Conservation Status: 🔴 Red

What am I?

A small wader, the dunlin is found along our shores all year round. It can often be sighted alongside golden plovers giving it the nickname ‘Plover’s Page’.

How to Identify Me

Easy to identify in its striking summer plumage which is brick red with an unmistakable black patch on its belly. While its winter plumage of white and grey is very similar to a sanderling, its slightly longer and downward curving beak helps to differentiate the two species.

How Can You Help Me?

Make sure you give them lots of space when you see these birds on the shore.

Dunlins tend to follow the tide line as they feed so where possible, try to avoid walking directly along the tide line and instead stick to footpaths or the sea wall if you see them foraging.

Also ensure to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
