What am I?

The largest wader on the Essex coast with a beak to match its size! You’ll often spy curlews on mudflats and estuaries probing deep in the mud to hunt for their next meal.

How to Identify Me

Easily identifiable thanks to their long, elegant and curved beak. You’ll frequently hear curlews before you see them as their haunting and evocative ‘cur-lee’ call is loud and unmistakable.

How Can You Help Me?

Once a common sight on our shores, curlew numbers have dropped significantly in the past few decades meaning they’re now a red listed species.

As curlews are migratory birds it is critical that they are given ample opportunity to feed. As mudflats are their key feeding habitat, please do keep clear of mudflats if you can see birds nearby.

Also ensure to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
