One of the larger terns to visit our shores, you’ll often spy sandwich terns scouting above the waves before diving down to catch fish.
Make sure to give them lots of space if you spot them nesting on sandy and shingle beaches as they come in to rest and nest after diving into the waves to hunt for food.
Ensure to respect signage regarding beach nesting birds as sandwich terns lay their eggs in little scrapes on open beaches.
It also helps to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
