The smallest tern to nest on Essex shores, often heard chattering away in small colonies or performing exceptional aerial acrobatics as they dive into the water hunting for small fish.
Make sure to give them lots of space if you spot them nesting on sandy and shingle beaches as they come in to rest and nest after diving into the waves to hunt for food.
Ensure to respect signage regarding beach nesting birds as little terns lay their eggs in little scrapes on open beaches. It also helps to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
