Little Grebe

Conservation Status: 🟢 Green

What am I?

Like a great crested grebe, but little and without a crest. But still great. This small diving bird can often be seen skilfully diving and paddling on water hunting for its next meal.

How to Identify Me

Little grebes are, as the name implies, very little. About half the size of a moorhen. Easily identifiable thanks to it’s shrill call when approached and its copper neck and white spot at the base of the beak.

How Can You Help Me?

Little Grebes will be quick to dive when they sense danger, so if you notice them consistently diving, make sure to give them a bit of extra space so that they can get back to foraging and nesting.

Also ensure to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
