Grey Heron

Conservation Status: 🟢 Green

What am I?

A patient hunter on the Essex Coast. Often sighted silently surveying the water with eyes peeled for its next meal.

How to Identify Me

An unmistakable coastal bird thanks to its distinctive shape, size and plumage. The bright yellow beak, black markings on the head and impressive size help distinguish it from the more frequently seen little egret.

How Can You Help Me?

Grey herons require time and quiet surroundings to hunt effectively so if their habitat is disturbed it can take a significant amount of time for their prey to return resulting in the grey heron losing critical time to feed.

As they can be found near riverbanks, do try to keep your dogs under control and not charging through rivers and reeds as this can frequently cause disturbances.

Also ensure to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
