Great Crested Grebe

Conservation Status: 🟢 Green

What am I?

And the award for ‘Best Hair’ goes to…the Great Crested Grebe! A diving waterbird found all year round. Check out their amazing mating rituals on lakes in summer and shallow coastal waters in winter.

How to Identify Me

These grebes can be distinguished by their striking plumage made of orange and brown feathers. This plumage is reduced in winter.  If you see them walking clumsily on land it’s because their legs are better suited to the water!

How Can You Help Me?

They’ve made a great comeback since being hunted for their beautiful plumage in Victorian times so it’s vital to ensure they continue to thrive.

Unlike other birds, they will dive to escape predators so if you see them suddenly start to dive frequently upon noticing you, try to give them much more space.

Also ensure to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
