One of our larger gulls. You can tell a herring gull apart from other gulls thanks to its pale grey wings, pink legs and red spot on its beak. Immature gulls are very challenging to tell apart as it can take years for their adult plumage to show.
Despite being a common site on our shores, the herring gull is currently red listed. This is due to significant population declines over the last few decades.
A significant lack of wild space and food consistently pushes them to have interactions with humans.
When you see gulls, please do your best to give them space, even if they seem keen to invade yours!
