Dark-bellied Brent Goose

Conservation Status: 🟠 Amber

What am I?

A small goose around the size of a mallard, they visit our shores in great numbers during the colder months, flying overhead in very loud groups.

How to Identify Me

A winter visitor and the smallest goose on the Essex coast, the dark bellied brent goose has a black head and neck, a dark belly and a white rump. You’ll often see them and hear their honking as they feed on eelgrass.

How Can You Help Me?

Make sure you give them lots of space as they come over to our shores for our winter.

One third of the world’s population of dark bellied brent geese find their way to our shores during winter so it is vital to not to disturb them to help preserve their numbers across the globe.

Also ensure to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
