Wigeon

Conservation Status: 🟠 Amber

What am I?

A prominent winter visitor, you’re always likely to hear their distinctive call or see their chestnut plumage as they dabble and forage for food on the water, riverbanks and grassy meadows.

How to Identify Me

You’re likely to hear wigeon before you see them as they’re one of the more vocal ducks with a unique ‘whistle-like’ call. Once you’ve spotted them they’re best identified thanks to their rusty and chestnut plumage with males having a pale spot just above their bill.

How Can You Help Me?

Make sure you give them lots of space when you see these birds on the shore or in rivers.

Wigeon tend to feed and gather with other ducks, so have your dog close by and not charging through the riverbank as this can cause significant distress and disturbance for waterfowl.

Also ensure to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
