Teal

Conservation Status: 🟠 Amber

What am I?

The smallest duck you’ll see on our shores, it takes its name from the vibrant and striking green marking on their wings.

How to Identify Me

While male teals are dapper gentlemen with striking gold, green and chestnut brown plumage  females have a more muted and mottled appearance. However, both sexes can be easily identified any time of year thanks to the striking green mark visible on their wing.

How Can You Help Me?

Make sure you give them lots of space when you see these birds on the shore or in rivers.

Teals tend to feed and gather with other ducks, so have your dog close by and not charging through the riverbank as this can cause significant distress and disturbance for waterfowl.

Also ensure to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
