Shelduck

Conservation Status: 🟠 Amber

What am I?

These dapper waterfowl are one of the larger ducks you’ll spy on the Essex coast. Keep your eyes peeled when on estuaries and mudflats as that’s where they prefer to feed.

How to Identify Me

Easily identifiable thanks to their handsome and colourful plumage of white, black, green and chestnut. Their striking orange bill is a great way to distinguish them from other waterfowl.

How Can You Help Me?

Make sure to give them lots of space if you spot them on shores, estuaries or mudflats.

Shelducks nest in other species’ disused burrows, so please be cautious even if walking in areas where you can’t see birds as you may be disturbing hidden nests.

It also helps to keep your ears and eyes peeled for distress calls or birds becoming aware of your presence.
